Apathy is the belief that your actions cannot change the world.
...but history has always been made by many small actions, together.
voting.org.au is about two things.
If everyone knew the fact that,
- Aussies can vote for anyone we want, because we can select multiple boxes
- We're very lucky to have our voting system.
(and electoral funding too, which helps little parties have a chance against the big ones.)
It might help show how unfair and frustrating voting systems around the world can be.
First, understand preferential voting in two minutes.
This video by the Australian Electoral Commission is surprisingly good, and makes things extremely clear.
(Less than 2 minutes long, and starts at 16 seconds.)
🦘Preferential voting allows you to vote for the candidate you really want.
If your first choice doesn't win, then your second choice is counted, and keeps flowing through.
🌏 Most countries use non-preferential voting which is an unfair system.
If you cannot cannot number or tick multiple boxes, your country will always:
- Have two parties in control, because your vote cannot flow
- Always be only two parties
- Never realistically allow other people to run.
Actual situation: no wonder everyone's screaming, because politicans don't need to listen to win.
Don't worry about the outcome, just focus on helping people.
We're working towards a world where governments listen because they're truly representative,
and there's a non-political failsafe too.
You can rapidly share preferential voting by,
- Screenshotting your political triangle results
- Recording a video to your friends explaining the voting system
- Sharing things online with #ausvotes, #auspol and #votingAU.
🛴 Zoomers
Show this site to everyone you know, and ask them to share it.
- Sharing on your story and friends (snap, insta, etc).
- Showing this site to your parents and grandparents, and giving them the triangle quiz.
- Asking parents "how do you feel about the government", and tech support for using socials, WhatsApp Broadcast, or plain old SMS to make a personal (maybe funny) message about voting system importance together.
You can show them this page to explain.
🇦🇺 Australians
Share on your story, and personally ask five (or more, being greedy here) people via voice or video.
Asking five people close to you to
- send the message to seven more of their friends.
we would reach every person on earth within two days.
From there, you can start movements in every country worldwide to question unfair voting systems.
⚠️ Aussies: You Need to Include The Authorisation ⚠️
If you're
- Sharing anything about voting, and
- You're an Australian citizen.
You legally need to include an authorisation. It's an election requirement, and you could get fined if you don't include it.
Just add a small line at the end of
- anything you post
- (and in the comments)
“Authorised by [Your Name], [Your City], Australia.”
*If it's a video: legal requirement that you say it out loud at the end too.***
Just like the advertisements you're seeing.
Without it, you could get in trouble — even if you’re just trying to help.
(don't include an authorisation if you're not Australian. you could also get in trouble too)
🌏 Everywhere
Have meaningful conversations about your frustration.
Problems facing "democracies" are because unfair voting systems are not democratic.
If you're live somewhere you can't tick or number multiple boxes, you do not live in a democracy.
If it's safe speaking out where you are, we can start:
- Shouting using social media
- Creating local conversations
- Considering the underlying systems, not people.
Sharing with (five) friends too, and asking them to share to their story, and five more people too helps a lot, as there are summaries for each country on the main page.
I should warn you, we'll find people who
- aren't interested
- are frustrated and angry with politics
- can't see a way out.
Just know that we're all human, we all have a belly button, and we're all going through something.
and, remember:
When has top down revolution ever worked? Change starts with you.
Step 1: Find your political beliefs with the Political Triangle.
Politically independent and easy to understand.
Step 2: Share with your friends.
A couple of options,
-
Screenshot the triangle
-
Record a video explain the preferential voting system
-
You can screenshot the triangle, or post on your story about preferential voting
-
Be a little creative, explain the voting system, or keep it simple
-
Chat with your mates
(and ask them to do the same).
